Small Region Kalocsa

The basic characteristic of the landscape is the region from the west bordering the Danube. The good quality soil, long hours of sunshine and the climate make perfect conditions for growing paprika and grapes. The region is multicultural due to Swabians, Slovaks, Catholic Serbs, and Serbs living here.
The one thousand year old Kalocsa is famous for its rich religious culture, baroque downtown, still flourishing folk art, and red paprika. Ornaments with magical colours exist in the works of local folk artists, wall painters, egg painters, and embroiderers. The paprika grown in and around Kalocsa is dried in strings.

The nearby Hajós is a centre of the region's wine tourism. This is part of the Hajós-Baja wine region. 1500 press-houses and cellars hollowed into the loess hills belong to the village where mostly Swabians live. It is known as the Hajós cellar village and protected.

The nationalities of the region are fond of their traditions. The Swabians of Harta still paint their furniture. The region is rich in game, the Danube in fish. The protected bustard is often seen here.
