Small Region Kiskunfélegyháza

A large part of the Small Region lies in the Kiskunság Sand-tableland, which is the most varied landscape of the Great Plain. The 11000 ha connecting area of the Kiskunság National Park is the Bócsa-Bugac region of sandy hills and sand fields. Its peculiar national value is the ancient juniper scrub. The region's tourism is centralised in the far away famous Bugacpuszta.

Kiskunfélegyháza with the plane tree alley was the headquarters of the Kiskun District Police Station for more than 100 years. The one-time official building is now a museum, where you can see the terrifying relics of the old prison life. There is a renovated trunk-windmill in the garden, the last memento of what were once hundreds . The town hall with the majolica decoration is a beautiful example of the flourishing Hungarian Nouveau Art in the early 20th century. The Hattyúház (Swanhouse) stands next to it where Sándor Petofi's father ran his slaughter house. The Kiskunfélegyháza swimming pool with indoor swimming pools and spas is situated in an enormous, beautiful park and visited by people even from the surrounding villages.

The Bugac puszta belonged to Kecskemét for centuries. Thousands of cattle and horses were grazing here from spring to autumn. The old Hungarian grey cattle, the rackajuh (Hungarian species of sheep) and the Hungarian half-breed horse is still bred because of gene protection. The Pásztor (Shepherd) Museum and an open air exhibition show the year long grazing in the open fields and the memories of the shepherds' life. There is an impressive horse show. The most spectacular part of the show is the galloping puszta ötös (driving five horses while standing on the back of two).
Tiszaalpár is famous for its fisherman. If you are boating on the Holt-Tisza (Tisza's back water) lined by gallery forests, you can admire the rare plants and birds.

The natural values must be emphasised at the evaluation of the region's tourist values. The thermal water (Kiskunfélegyháza), the Tisza, the Holt-Tisza, the protected natural values (Bócs-Bugac, Szikra, some parts of the Alpár meadow, Péteri lake's bird reservation), the flora, game protection, the number of sunshine hours, fruit growing and organic farming offer special possibilities. The local Hungarian people are very hospitable and warm hearted and play an important element in country and farm tourism. The following places have great importance in tourism:

Horse riding tourism was established in Bugac, Fülöpjakab, Pálmonostora, Tiszaalpár, and Kiskunfélegyháza. Among them the most significant horse farm is Bugac where champions of international contests train. Some of them are still the leading figures of Bugac horse-riding. Horse-shows, horse driving, teaching driving and riding is internationally recognised. The horse shows bring back the memory of our horse culture and the puszta life. Horse riding clubs operate in several villages and there is an increasing demand for learning riding and driving. Horse riding trails lined with signs were made in Bugac and a similar one will be built in Tiszaalpár.

If you ride a horse or a bike or sit in a carriage you can get a closer look at the region's famous spots, natural values and cultural traditions. There are farms along the trails and roads where you can see the life of the farms. The hiking trails are often visited by tourists who want to admire nature's beauty.

There are several places in the region where organic farming is done without pesticides and insecticides. The basic demand of the natural way of life is that food products do not contain artificial ingredients. There are several experiments in the region in connection with food processing without preservatives and artificial ingredients.

A characteristic and special way of producing organic products is to grow herbs. It can be the symbol of the natural way of life, because they can be used in various fields (basic materials of curative and beauty products).

The rich fauna of the region attract foreign (mostly Italian, German, Austrian) tourists. The hunting clubs of the villages help them, accommodation is given by farm houses and pensions.

Due to the unfavourable conditions from the view of agriculture, significant natural values have been preserved in the western part of the Small Region, which is presented by the Kiskunság National Park VI. Bugacpuszta. Mostly land cultivation is done in the eastern part, while people grow vegetables, grape, and fruits in the western sandy areas. Organic farming is spreading nowadays, following the international trends, and the desire to sell the products better. Besides farming, pig, cattle, horse and poultry rearing can be mentioned as a source of income. The region is famous for its geese, the feather and the goose liver are important products of export. The political changes brought the greatest improvement to the services of commerce and tourism. There are more and more private enterprises in the region, year by year, mostly in Kiskunfélegyháza, Tiszaalpár, Jászszentlászló, Bugac)
