Small Region Kiskunmajsa
The
Kiskunmajsa Small Region is located in the middle of the east edge of the
flat area between the Danube and the Tisza, in Bács-Kiskun county.
Csongrád county borders it from the south and the east, the Kiskunfélegyháza
Small Region from the north-east, Kiskunhalas and Kiskorös Small Regions
from the west. The Small Region does not touch the frontier. It is statistically
the smallest among Bács Kiskun county's regions. Its size is 391.93
km2. It includes four villages: Kiskunmajsa, Szank, Csólyospálos
and Kömpöc. The Small Region can be found in the south-east belt
of the sand table land. It is a completely flat area. The typical type of
soil is varied sand. The climate is excellent because of the number of sunshine
hours and the high temperature. There is a considerably large nature conservation
area in the surrounding areas of Kiskunmajsa, the Bodoglár hawthorn
bush on a 260 ha land.
The 20 ha big Csólyospálos geology excavation is also a nature conservation area. An important natural value of the area is the thermal water found in 1984 in Kiskunmajsa. There are two thermal wells operating now, both established from unproductive oil wells. They operate the Kiskunmajsa thermal spa, which is nationally important from the view of tourism.
The economy of the region is based on agriculture, more than 6000 people
are farming. Tourism attracts more and more people, it is a developing industry.
Among the villages of the region, Kiskunmajsa has the oldest history. People
used to live here in the early Middle Ages in a settlement called MAYOSSASZÁLLÁS.
The village was ruined during the Turkish conquest. It is the biggest village
in the region with 11794 inhabitants, in an area of 221.99 km2. There is
a neat holiday resort, built in the past 15 years, belonging to the town,
in the direction of Kiskunfélegyháza, 2.5 km from Kiskunmajsa.
The centre was established to serve the tourists visiting the thermal spa.
There are about 400 bungalows with 1600 beds awaiting guests.
The Thermal spa Motel and Camping are important elements in Kiskumajsa's
tourism. There are open air pools, a lake and roofed swimming pools that
make operation possible all year long. A new, beautiful swimming pool will
be ready in the spring of 2001, which will colour the services of the spa.
There is a medication unit belonging to the spa which was inaugurated in
autumn. The motel and campsite are very modern, the motel can receive 84
guests.
Numerous services connected to tourism wait for the guests. There
is a horse riding centre, restaurants, Collection of Local History, and a
Peasant House.
The Majsa Days (September) and the Beer-Swimming Festival (July 28-29 and
August 4-5 ) are traditionally organised every year. There are fishing ponds
in Kiskunmajs and Szank waiting for the fans of fishing.
Szank is the second most populated village of the region with 2591 people.
The village was settled later than Kiskunmajsa town. Its real development
started with the oil industry. The Szank Festival is an important event in
the life of the village. It is organised every year on August 26th.
Csólyospálos
is the third largest village with 1694 inhabitants. Csólyospálos
cannot be said to be old. A great many people live out in farms. There is
a nature reserve here with a geology excavation.
The village organises a Harvest Ball every year on the first Sunday of October
and a Village Day at the end of July and start of August.
Kömpöc is the smallest village of the small region with 839 inhabitants.
Kömpöc is relatively young. a great many live in farms. The Kömpöc
Village Day will be organised on the 28th of July this year. There is a harvest
procession from the Kömpöc Culture Centre to the church, where
wheat and the bread will be blessed. Carriges with wheat gavels, horsemen
and dancing children follow the procession. Sport programs and exhibitions
colour the village day on the previous day.
