Small Region Kunszentmiklós
The
most beautiful lands of the Upper Kiskunság and the Danube area can
be seen here: the greatest connecting saline meadow of Hungary, the Danube
bank still preserving its natural wilderness in many places - a paradise
for fishermen and water tourists- the flood forests. Sándor Petofi
had ties of family and friendship in several villages of the region. The
memories of his visits are preserved.
Kunszentmiklós is the capital of the Upper Kiskunság. The famous Reformat secondary grammar school has been educating the young people since the 17th century. The bust of Sándor Petofi stands in front of the Town Hall, built in classic style. There are several memorial places in the surrounding area - Szabadszállás, Szalkszentmárton, Dunavecse - where the poet's cult is still alive. Among the places is Kunszentmiklós, where the poet was most strongly attached to. There is a Local History Museum established in the Virág house which is the old house of Gedeon Virág the major of the 1848 revolution. The collection of the museum came from the rich ethnography, biology, and history of literature collection of the Kiskunság National Park. One of the biggest buzzard populations lives in the saline meadow under strict protection. The Selyem farm, built in the middle of the last century is a museum today.
Small exhibition of local history evokes the old life of the outlaws in the Nyakvágó (throat cutter) Inn, where the innkeeper's wife was killed because of jealousy. Ancient Hungarian breeds of animals are raised in the Bösztörpuszta gene reserve such as gray cattle, bulls and a Hungarian breed of sheep. Avocet, plover and tern lay eggs at the saline lakes, which have peculiar flora and fauna. The furred Catholic Church is one of the sights in the agricultural Szabadszállás. Apostag is famous for the renovated synagogue that functions today as a Village house. The European Council awarded the village with the Europe-Nostre prize in appreciation of their ancient monument protection. The Jewish cemetery is preserved, in almost its original condition, next to the synagogue.
